Fantasy

by Charlotte Anderson

Music begins its precious story;
Various sounds add to the glory.
Violins first, then the brass.
With every crescendo, the audience asks.
Then, as a whisper of wind,
A voice is beginning to ascend.
Curling around the captured audience,
The notes, like smoke, have their own scent.
Never bitter, never sour
Increasing loveliness by the hour.
Two blue eyes with a warming stare
Tell of his rapturous, seductive lair.
Hair falls carelessly into those eyes;
Curls that can wrap a finger and tell lies.
A body accustomed to staged fights,
A body accustomed to long, sultry nights.
Finally the voice, the trademark begins.
Finally the voice that causes my sin.
Melting into a puddle at my front row seat
I'm sure the god onstage can hear my heartbeat!
An hour passes, then two.
Yet I'm still caught in the haunting tune.
But the music dies and all stand.
Demanding another song, never to understand.
Only me, myself and I
Know how he must want to die.
A single look into my soul
Reveals his own tormented goal.
The theater empties and I'm all alone,
Except for a woman whose eyes shone.
"Come with me," was all she said.
And I was willing but my feet were lead.
Push, tug, I'm moving now.
Feeling very much like a sow.
Through a side door and down a battered hall,
I knew who was there, away from all.
The single knock and a whoosh of wind
Suddenly I was alone with Him!
"I saw the knowledge in your soul
And knew you could make me whole."
Magic words, yet full of air.
Empty as a mime's blank stare.

"Your recognition of myself is incredible,
Yet this is all very indelible.
May we learn of each other first?
Then I will gladly go through childbirth."
He smiled at my straightforward answer,
What a benefit that he was a chancer.
"I felt that you would cause me joy...
I feel like such a little boy!
Let us leave this dismal theater stage...
Become my bride and I'll be your bridegroom."
A smile crept over my lips
And I saw his head begin to dip.
With a kiss as soft as a butterfly touch,
The engagement sealed with only that much.
The announcement made, the date set.
But, sadly, love was not acquired yet.
Fantasy realized and would live forever, but
Leave this chance? Never!
Off a long finger, a diamond ring appeared.
"This was my mother's, I loved her dear.
Please wear it as long as you live...
With love be what you give?"
A yearnful gaze was met with mine
It was then that I gave him my sign.
My eyes brightened, my smile grew,
"Yes, of course I'll love you too!"
One more kiss, deeper than the last.
"Now let's leave with a sufficient blast!"
Away we went to his home to celebrate;
The date was set for September 8.
People disapproved and family warned,
But a couple in love lets others be darned.
The day came and as wonderful.
The sun, the sky, all was beautiful.
The veil was a whisper to cover a virgin's face;
Beads covered the thin English lace.
Minimal words and the deed was done,
Now is the time to begin the fun.
Dancing, singing all without the dangerous drink.
All were sober but none could think.
The limousine left the fairy tale sight,
Disappearing into the velvet night.
A Honeymoon suite awaited the lovers,
But never before had they been together.
Nine months later a new life has come;
A beautiful son who will never be dumb.
Named for his father, but eyes that are mine.
I only wish I could see him at age nine.
Darkness is falling over my body and heart.
The anguish is tearing me apart.
My husband's strangled plea to save my life
Will be the start of his profound strife.
I'm floating up and looking down
At the still form almost on the ground.
He pulls it closer to his tears,
Can't he see that I'm not there?
A still small voice beckons me to a light.
I dawdle and then put up a worthy fight.
"Let him see me just once more!"
My plea did not fall on a closed door.
The babe was carried in and given to my love
One look and I saw a peaceful dove.
They would be all right without me, I knew.
But I would visit and let them feel my love too.
My husband looked up and smiled at me;
He has been granted to see.
He spoke words that had never been spoken before;
Three words upon which I had set such a store.
"I love you" he whispered no louder than a breeze.
"I know" and then I vanished like a dream.
