Thalia's Close Encounter with Michael

I saw POTO in NY 2 weeks before Michael left. There was an abso- lute frenzy at the stage door, with a crowd that actually included 3 Japanese girls who had just seen POTO in London and had flown over so they could catch THE Phantom. The Majestic has a large door and in another door with a small door inset which was also open, no doubt to allow air to circulate--it was a warm evening. As the actors came out the large door, everyone surged over there to get their autographs. I held back because I was somewhat embarrassed. After a half-hour of this I happened to glance inside the small inset door and could see Michael coming down a long hallway wearing a green sports club jacket (NY Jets?), carrying a sports bag and looking like little boy lost. Before he stepped outside he took a deep breath. But once he was among the fans (probably over 100 of them) the exhaustion dropped from his face and he was unbelievably gracious, giving every one of them autographs, chatting and quipping. It was probably the greatest performance on Broadway that evening. He made 100+ people very happy that night. He is a real pro.
