Near Encounters from the Isle of Sheppey

Submitted by John

I first heard of Michael when I was at school in the 1970's when a programme called 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em' was on the TV. We all knew that he came from Sheerness and when we heard that he was coming back to film an episode of the show here we were all very excited at school. I was quite excited at thought of seeing the man himself. On the day of filming at Sheerness seafront, my parents would not let me go to watch him make the show. Sheerness is about 3 miles from where I lived at that time and my parents considered it too far away for an 11 year old to go on his own. The next day at school, all of my friends were talking about it, and how good it was when he drove his car off then end of the jetty into the sea.....while I was left to just hear about it and wait for the show to be broadcast.

In 1999, my wife and I went for a weekend in Edinburgh. While I was there I caught a glimpse of a sign that said Michael Crawford would be at a local bookstore to sign copies of 'Parcel Arrived Safely'. Memories of that day in Sheerness when I was unable to see him came back and I made my way to that book shop. When I arrived, I discovered that he had been in the day before, so again I had missed him. I did however buy a signed copy of the book, so a small consolation anyway.

My father remembers Michael as a boy. My father worked at a butchers shop in Halfway and remembers a young lad with sandy coloured hair roller skating past the shop everyday on his way to the train station in Sheerness. A family friend used to baby-sit Michael when he was a small child. Of course she is fond of telling this story when ever she is asked now.
