The Joys of Busing It

Submitted by Janet C.

I was lucky to meet MC during his "Evening with Andrew Lloyd Webber" tour in '91. My city was the next to last on the stop and he decided to ride the bus with the guys to the last stop. I waited outside the civic center until about 1 am with only four other women ranging in age from early twenties to late fifties. I was just 31 at the time and the ticket had been a birthday present. The guys who were loading the bus kept telling us that he had already left but one among us had been by the Civic Center earlier that day and had spoken to the limo driver. He told her that Michael would not be taking the limo to the airport after the concert but instead would take the bus. Thank God he was telling her the truth. We milled around on the sidewalk and waited remembering aloud our impressions of the concert. I looked up the driveway to the large loading doors when I heard some people approaching. The guys who had been loading the bus were walking towards me. Amid them all was a man wearing glasses, blue jeans, and a plaid shirt - Michael! I barely had time to say "He's here" when all the other women - there were only 3 others by that time - surrounded Michael. He was kind and gracious to them all. A woman was there with her mother who asked for a hug which he happily gave. When he had spoken to them and signed their programs it was my turn. I handed him my program, turned to the page with his Phantom photo, and just looked at him. He asked my name and thank God I remembered it! As he wrote on the program I reached out and touched his left arm and thanked him for all of his music and the wonderful evening. As he turned away and I did likewise a question poped into my head so I turned back to him. "Michael," I said. He looked back to me and said "Yes?" "When are you doing a new recording?" "I have been working on one for a while and will finish it as soon as I get home to England" he said. "Do you know the title?" I asked. "No," he said "but it will be all of Andrew's music." "When should I look for it?" "Sometime in September" he said and boarded the bus.

Michael is truly a very special person.
