Dreams Come True

Submitted by Diane P.

I never used to be an Michael Crawford fan but my best girlfriend knows him and has met up with him several times over the past 15 years and she was always saying how lovely he was.

My friend (Bubbles) and I were meeting some clients for a leisurely lunch at one of Sydney's most beautiful seaside restaurants, Doyles at Watson's Bay.

Suddenly, there was a buzz in the restaurant. Bubbles noticed that Richard Wilkins, a well known has-been celebrity music reporter was there. So what we thought--more to the point who was that guy with the red hair walking behind him. Suddenly Bubbles screamed, "Oh, my God, it's Michael Crawford!" and with that she grabbed her cheque book and me and made a beeline for MC who was being interviewed by Richard. There was a break in filming and Bubbles told MC she just loved him and loved his music. MC flashed one of those glorious smiles at her and said skeptically (he thought she was sending him up and I did too as she had never mentioned him to me) that he thought she was too young to be one of his fans. She then told him about a song she adored from one of his earlier CDs which MC said was a Neil Diamond song, so finally he believed she was genuine. He graciously signed her cheque book (which is all she had with her) and he laughed one of those big boisterous laughs as he flicked through the cheque book noting, "You're a very wealthy woman" I like wealthy women, and you're one of the wealthiest women I've seen."

All I could do was stare at him, his lovely long fingers, his beautiful blue eyes as he sat there in the sun in a gorgeous blue shirt, grinning ear to ear.

The following Monday it was advertised that the interview would be on the next day and we were thrilled to find we didn't end up on the cutting room floor so now we have a wonderful keepsake. The funny thing was we had taken a sick day off from work to go to the lunch and our boss had seen us on National Television at Doyles with Michael Crawford. I don't care, it was well worth it just to have those few minutes with him. Oh! he really is a dream come true!
