Lunch and a Walk with Michael

Submitted by CW.

My first encounter with Michael was walking down the street. When he first started working at the Ahmanson theater (part of the Music Center complex) he walked to work (he lived across the street from the Music Center). I was walking to work (on a Saturday) to catch a shuttle bus and Michael was walking towards me in the opposite direction. We sort of met at the same time and did one of those dances. You know where you go one way and the other person also goes the same way. I usually am the one who stops and lets the other person go by. So I did that and he laughed and walked past me. After he walked past me, I realized that it was Michael Crawford. I looked behind me but he was walking at a fast clip and my bus was coming. So I couldn't follow him. I had to go to work, Iwas the system administrator at work and they needed me to come in.

I was with the entertainment editors of Drama Log and the L.A. Times, and also with the marketing director of the Music Center complex (where the Ahmanson theater was located.) He was talking about his album "Phantom Unmasked." We asked questions about the record. He did say one thing, that his daughter said his record was number one, at that time, in England, above a popular rock band. (I can't remeber the band's name). His daughter said ,"Dad was really Rad!" But everything else was pretty much business. He did ask me where I had gotten a booklet on Hello Dolly. He showed the book to his agent. I had gotten the book with my record album of the soundtrack from Hello Dolly. I was a fan of Michael's even then. He just laughed.
