The Birth of Michael's Girls

From "The Ray Martin Show."

Ok, in the International Who's Who...the birth name of the Michael is listed as spelled D-u-m-b-l-e--Smith. But in the first part of this next story, he says it as if it is DUMB-E-L-L--Smith. So that's how it's going to be spelled in the story.

Ray Martin: So when did you change the name, when did you become Michael Crawford?

The Michael: I became when I..I did a few jobs and then at 15, I left school, because in those days you could and I wasn't..y'know I was studying to be a brain surgeon at the time and uh, .....did you say something?

Ray Martin: No, no, no.

M: And I didn't think I'd ...REALLY get there so uh.. I wanted to go in the Air Force, and I wanted to fly but I really didn't acedemically have it so.. as they say. 'Cause as soon as I started when I was fifteen, seriously acting I mean I..that was...I was doing about four radio shows a day..and there was another Michael Ingram, so I..that was my step-father's name so that was the name I ..I.. I had acquired, I .. I was..I was born Michael Patrick Dumbell-Smith, so I soon got rid of THAT. So.

Ray Martin: Dumbell-Smith?

M: Yes, alright? You don't have to repeat it. OK? You've said it once! and then I just, they said you've got to change your name so I.. I.. literally looked at this looked at a van going by, a biscuit van, and it said "Crawford's Biscuits" and I thought that looks quite nice so I chose Crawford, but little did I know it would take me years to get my name in lights 'cause there were so many damn lightbulbs in Crawford. It's a long name.
