Barnum's Angel

Submitted by Leatha B.

A favorite story about the generosity of Michael Crawford, was published in the British version of the "Reader's Digest", during the time Mr. Crawford was performing the lead character in the musical, "Barnum"...in London. (1984-1985)

He had heard of a young girl, who was dying from cancer, at Great Ormond Street hospital, and that she so wanted to see "Barnum" as she was a great fan of Michael.

He made arrangements with the theatre, on the day off, to pull out the first two rows of seats, in the front, and roll this little girl's hospital bed directly in the front row, with all the machines and tubes of medication still attached to her. The entire cast, crew and orchestra came that day...and performed the entire show, playing directly to that patient. She was thrilled and told them it was the best day of her life. Not a dry eye was left among the cast.

A few weeks later, Michael had to inform the cast, that the tiny angel had passed away. It is Michael Crawford's behind-the-scenes charitable endeavors which make him a hero in all our eyes.
