Jon Maloney
Hi. You have probably dropped in after linking to one of my pages from a search. Or perhaps
another site links to this one. This is my personal home page. I could rewrite
this page a hundred times a hundred ways. Instead, I'll just release what I've written thus far and make changes
later. I am 55 years old (b. 1954), with brown hair and blue-gray eyes. My height is just over 6'1" and I
weigh 170 pounds. I am single.
Computer and Internet
I have enjoyed working and playing on my computer for years. The Internet is incredible! I am
amazed at how much information is readily available and how easy it is to find using free search sites. Retrieving
data on the Internet has quickly become one of my favorite pastimes. Internet-related activities have quickly replaced
my other computer activities. Just learning enough to create and maintain this web site was a major undertaking.
Animals
I have always enjoyed animals -- reading about them, watching them, and photographing them.
I carry a small auto-focus camera on my vacations and hikes. I have two picture sites now, with different pictures on each site: Animal Pictures and Animal Pictures and More.
Chinese Porcelain (China) -- Rose Medallion & Rose Canton
I recently photographed selected pieces from my father's china collection. My father inherited Rose Medallion, Rose Canton, and miscellaneous pieces from his father in the 1960s. Most of the china was purchased from a dealer in Hong Kong in 1921. Click here to see my Chinese porcelain pictures.
Waterfalls
I recently scanned many of the waterfall pictures I took while hiking in the 1980s and 1990s. There are about 65 waterfall pictures from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Click here to see my waterfall pictures.
Hot Air Balloons
For the last few years I have taken hot air balloon pictures during the Freedom Weekend Aloft festival in Anderson, SC. Click here to see my best Hot Air Balloon Pictures.
Movies
I enjoy many types of movies. I most enjoy intellectually stimulating films that are weird,
disturbing, suspenseful, or unpredictable. My favorite movies are those that are intense enough to keep me thinking about them for a few days.
Astral Projection
I first became interested in astral projection when I was a teenager. Since that time my experiences
have been mostly limited to several brief, poorly-recalled projections each year. However, every few years I experience
an intense projection that revitalizes my interest in the subject. I also experience other psychic and paranormal
phenomena. I am introspective and spiritual, but not religious.
Reading
I love books. I read every night before going to sleep. I read science fiction (particularly all the Hugo and Nebula Award winners), espionage, military novels, contemporary thrillers, books on metaphysical topics, and an occasional biography.
Word Humor
I enjoy the humorous aspects of the English language -- heteronyms, oxymorons, and unusual word
etymologies. A heteronym is one of two words having the same spelling, but with different pronunciations and meanings. "Incense"
is an example. (Lies incense me. The air smelled of
incense.) An oxymoron is a phrase that combines contradictory words. "Virtual reality"
is an example.
Lottery
I play the lottery because I long for the freedom that financial independence would provide. I also enjoy the charitable
aspects of buying lottery tickets. My purchases provide additional income for the school system, plus they help
someone become a millionaire almost every week. That makes me feel good. Although I haven't won yet, at least my
contribution increases the jackpot received by whoever does win. Some people object to the lottery as another tax.
Yet it's a tax that the citizenry loves to pay; demands to pay. Each participant buys a little hope, the state
obtains substantial education funds, and someone wins in spite of outrageous odds. It's even voluntary. If some
people are against lotteries for religious or social reasons, they don't have to participate. And those people
can even benefit from better schools without contributing anything. Everyone wins.
Hiking
From the mid eighties through mid 1997 I went on day-hikes two or three times a month, usually
alone. I love the beauty, the solitude, the wildlife, the peace, and the fresh air. There are several national
forests and state parks containing hundreds of miles of trails within 70 miles of my home. Hiking helps me stay
in shape, it rejuvenates me, and it gets me out of the house. I keep a log of the miles I hike. My cumulative total
now exceeds 2,300 miles. I haven't hiked much in the last couple of years. Perhaps in the future hiking will again
become one of my regular activities.
Other Interests
Wildlife, strange phenomena, Happy Rhodes, bizarre news, and radio scanning.
