The present jail was built in1996 and 1997 with opening day being July 1, 1997. The S.C. Dept of Corrections rated the jails capacity at 26 for males and 2 for females. The building is a direct supervision, single level facility with approximately 9000 square feet of floor space.
The average daily population during 1998 was 10 inmates. During a period starting January 1, 1998 and ending December 31, 1998 there were a total of 2,869 inmates booked with 2,062 being male and 807 being female. Of these, 52% were Black and 48 % were white. The jail documented a total of 12,484 inmate days during 1998.
The Jail is staffed by 14 full time personnel. The jail Adminstrator is also a certified police officer. His hours are normally first shift. The assistant adminstrator normally works second shift. The four shifts are composed of a Corporal in charge of the shift and two jail officers. They work 12 hours and rotate shift every 28 days, working 14 days out of 28.
The County Jail has a working contract with an area Doctor to visit the jail one day a week and be on call for the facility in case of emergencies. The jail is located three and one half miles from the local hospital.
The Jail houses inmates arrested by the Union County Sheriff's Office, State Agencies, and has contracts with three municipal police departments to house their inmates.
An addition is planned for the Union County Jail which will give us the ability to house a larger daily population.
The Union County Jail is a Division of the Union County Sheriff's Office with the adminstrator answering directly to the Sheriff.
